A decidedly lovely corner pub in the back streets of Angel, the 170-year-old Charles Lamb is a dainty delight in cream and pastel green. Named after the Georgian writer who lived locally, there are few finer pubs in which to curl up in the corner, on a quiet afternoon, and dip into a classic novel. The owner also runs an art gallery, as can be glimpsed in the pub's map room, which contains numerous pieces by map-king Stephen Walter. As a freehouse, the CL offers an ever-changing range of ales, but also boasts an admirable wine list, including some on its own label. The food menu is ever-changing and looks sumptuous.
